A critical appeal for your help in our struggling Orthodox monastery’s mission.

Monk Nicholas Joseph

Today’s blog  is an appeal

Monastery of the Holy Martyrs is a small monastic community in Northern Indiana. We also host St. Mary the Proectress – Syriac Orthodox community.

Christ tells us “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, so you do unto me.” If we listen, we hear the call to be open to one another, to give what we have and to welcome all guests as we would welcome Christ. We are a place of healing and nourishment, where folks respond to each other’s human needs.

Our first job is to pray for the world, for her salvation, your salvation and our salvation. We know that praying to end hunger is without meaning, unless you also feed those who are hungry. So we feed the hungry without question!

Why does the Lord allow there to be poor among us? “For your good, so that you may…

The Writer in Black

I got busy yesterday so didn’t get a blog post up.  Sorry.

Today went with the family to see Dunkirk.

See.  This.  Movie.

One thing annoyed me about it, the use of shakeycam.  However the movie was so riviting that toward the end when I was getting nauseated I thought maybe someone had mixed up the drink machine and I’d gotten sugared pop.  It wasn’t until later that it dawned on me.  I was so rivited by the story that I completely forgot the shakeycam even though it was making me sick.

That may sound like a mixed result but really, it’s high praise indeed for a story.

The movie starts with a squad of British soldiers in town making their way back toward the beach.  They come under fire from unseen assailants.  As they flee, they get picked off one by one, until there’s only one left.  The one…

Team Kimberlin has not had a good summer as far as PR is concerned. Cabin Boy Bill Schmalfeldt got a peace order slapped on him. Pedi Officer No-Class Gillette got outed as an ex-con who did federal time for kiddie porn and who seems to be an unregistered sex offender. The Dread Pirate Kimberlin’s family issues hit the courts and his wife has accused him of having sex with her while she was underage and not married causing the Dread Pirate title to morph into Dread Pedo. And those are just the highlights.

Last week, Team Kimberlin tried to use the Mother Jones story as a basis to spin up some kind of tale to distract from their bad publicity. But timing is everything. Tetyana Kimberlin’s charges against Brett overwhelmed the Groundswell.

It’s a real shame. They seem to have had a really good story cooked up about how Aaron…

In English:

Sunday of the Holy Fathers

Reading from the Synaxarion: On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together in the Seven Ecumenical Councils, that is: the First Council, of the 318 Fathers who assembled in Nicaea in 325 to condemn Arius, who denied that the Son of God is consubstantial with the Father; the Fathers of the First Council also ordained that the whole Church should celebrate Pascha according to the same reckoning; the Second Council, of the 150 Fathers who assembled in Constantinople in 381 to condemn Macedonius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who denied the Divinity of the Holy Spirit; the Third Council, of the 200 Fathers who assembled in Ephesus in 431, to condemn Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who called Christ a mere man and not God incarnate; the Fourth Council, of the 630 who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarn ation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches; the Fifth Council in 553, of the 165 who assembled in Constantinople for the second time to condemn Origen and Theodore of Mopsuestia, the teacher of Nestorius; the Sixth Council in 680, of the 170 who assembled in Constantinople for the third time, to condemn the Monothelite heresy, which taught that there is in Christ but one will, the divine; and the Seventh Council in 787, of the 350 who assembled in Nicaea for the second time to condemn Iconoclasm. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal of the First Tone Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is co-beginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead. Apolytikion of Sun. of the Holy Fathers in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone You are greatly glorified, O Christ our God, who established our Fathers as luminaries upon the earth, and through them led us all to the true Faith. O Most compassionate, glory to You. Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Tone O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Fun With Gunpowder

Yesterday afternoon, I got a phone call from my good friend and occasional co-defendant Stacy McCain. He invited me out to an undisclosed location for a fireworks display that he was putting together. It turned out to be an impressive show, in large part because of Stacy’s expertise in the use of timed fusing to program the fireworks. Here are a few photos from the display—

A good time was had by all, and no Tovex was used in any of the fireworks.

UPDATE—Be sure to scroll down through the comment section of the video.

What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Church Like That?

What's Cooking

Icon of Christ from St. Catherine’s on Mt. Sinai, one of the oldest existing icons of Christ. The division in the face represents the Christ will not only be our judge but He also loves us.

I was raised in a variety of denominations: Brethren in Christ, Nazarene, Wesleyan Methodist, Brethren. For our education, my siblings and I attended a number of Christian schools, including a conservative Mennonite school. Later, I worked at a Mennonite restaurant for about three years. Oh, and my maternal grandparents left the Amish church to become Pentecostal. I am a Christian mutt.

For many years, our family attended every possible service–Sunday morning, Sunday evening, Wednesday prayer service, and any revival that was happening nearby. We read Scripture at home, went to Bible classes at school, and were generally a very pious, devout family.

When I was eight or nine, the Brethren in Christ church closed…
